The scale pattern is a very simple traditional pattern found all over the world, consisting of overlapping equilateral or isosceles triangles with the background and pattern alternating in a zigzag fashion. In Japan, it has been depicted in ancient tomb murals and was named for its resemblance to fish scales.

The scale pattern is associated with snakes and butterflies, representing shedding and the meaning of casting off misfortune and regenerating. In the Edo period, it was considered a pattern for warding off evil.

Also, the numbers "eight" and "nine" are read as "yaku" (misfortune), and "seven" (nana) is considered "without misfortune and auspicious" as it comes before eight and nine. It seems that seven colors were believed to have the effect of warding off evil! Is it like our "lucky seven" today?
