Plum blossoms are depicted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl using Hiramaki-e (a technique where a pattern is drawn with lacquer, then gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries, and after it dries, lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished to a finish).

This exquisite piece features plum blossoms shining golden under the moonlight, painted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl that subtly gleams like a dark night.

【What is Maki-e?】
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing a pattern with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder on it before it dries, and then, after it dries, applying lacquer to the patterned area and polishing it to a finish. A single Maki-e piece requires a surprising number of steps and a great deal of time to complete.
