Waves are depicted on the black-lipped oyster shell using hira-makie (a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, and then lacquer is applied over the design after it dries and polished to finish).
This exquisite piece features waves shimmering golden under the moonlight, against the subtly translucent black-lipped oyster shell, reminiscent of a dark night.
【What is Makie?】
Makie is a traditional Japanese craft technique that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing a design with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder before it dries completely, and then applying lacquer over the design after it dries and polishing it to finish. A single makie piece requires an astonishing number of steps and a great deal of time to complete.
Size = Width: 15 × Length: 15 × Thickness: 3 (mm)
Brand = Mt.Artigiano (Urushi Art Hariya)
