Arabesque patterns are drawn on black-lipped mother-of-pearl using the Hiramakie technique (a method where a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, and then lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished after drying).

This exquisite piece features an arabesque pattern shining golden as if bathed in moonlight, depicted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl that shimmers faintly like a dark night.

What is Makie?
Makie is a traditional Japanese craft unique to Japan that has been passed down since the Heian period. It is a technique where a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, and then lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished after drying. It takes an astonishing number of steps and a lot of time to complete a single piece of makie.
