They are crafted using the traditional raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) technique.

Raden is a highly labor-intensive manufacturing process that involves carving patterns into a lacquered surface, inlaying cut pieces of shell to match those patterns, then applying lacquer again from above, polishing until the luster emerges.
