A gold hemp leaf design is depicted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl using the hirame maki-e technique (a method where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries, and then, after it dries, lacquer is applied over the design and polished to finish).

How about this as a gift for those who love Japan or for international guests?

[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft unique to Japan that has been passed down since the Heian period. It is a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries, and then, after it dries, lacquer is applied over the design to fix it, and it is polished to finish. It takes a surprising number of steps and a long time to complete a single maki-e piece.
