The Shippo design, crafted in gold on black mother-of-pearl, is created using the hira-maki-e technique: a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries, and once dry, lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished to finish.
How about giving this as a gift to someone who loves Japan or to a foreign friend?
【What is Maki-e?】
Maki-e is a unique traditional Japanese craft that has been passed down since the Heian period. It involves drawing a pattern with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder on before it dries, and once dry, applying lacquer to the patterned area to fix it, then polishing it to finish. A single maki-e piece requires a surprising number of steps and a lot of time to complete.
