The black mother-of-pearl features a gold Seigaiha (wave pattern) design, created using the hira maki-e technique (a method where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled before it dries, and then, after drying, lacquer is applied over the design and polished).
How about this as a gift for someone who loves Japan, or for someone from another country?
[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft unique to Japan, passed down since the Heian period. It is a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled before it dries completely, then after drying, lacquer is applied over the design to fix it, and it is polished to a finish. A single maki-e piece requires an astonishing number of steps and a great deal of time to complete.
Size = Width: 15 × Length: 15 × Thickness: 3 (mm)
Brand = Mt. Artigiano (Urushi Art Hariya: Takayuki Hariya)
Materials = Brass/rhodium coating, black mother-of-pearl, gold powder, lacquer, abalone shell
