[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing patterns with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder onto the still-wet lacquer, and then, once dry, applying more lacquer over the pattern and polishing it to finish. An astonishing number of steps and a great deal of time are required to complete a single piece of maki-e.
