[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that has been handed down since the Heian period. It involves drawing patterns with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder before the lacquer dries, and then applying lacquer to the patterned areas and polishing them after they dry. It takes an astonishing number of steps and a long time to complete a single maki-e piece.
