[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing patterns with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder onto the still-wet lacquer, and then, after it dries, applying more lacquer to the pattern and polishing it to a finish. The creation of a single maki-e piece involves a surprisingly large number of steps and a considerable amount of time.
