[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that has been passed down since the Heian period. It is a technique in which patterns are drawn with lacquer, and while the lacquer is still wet, gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto it. Once dry, lacquer is applied again to the patterned areas and then polished to finish. It takes a surprising number of steps and a lot of time to complete a single maki-e piece.
