This exquisite piece features a majestic design of rough waves reminiscent of Katsushika Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa," rendered on a black butterfly shell that subtly shines like a dark night.

[What is Maki-e?]
Maki-e is a unique traditional Japanese craft passed down from the Heian period. It involves drawing patterns with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder onto the still-wet lacquer, and then, once dry, applying more lacquer to the patterned areas and polishing them to a finish. An astonishing number of steps and a great deal of time are required to complete a single maki-e piece.
