[What is Makie?]
Makie is a traditional Japanese craft unique to Japan, passed down since the Heian period. It involves drawing patterns with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder before the lacquer dries completely, and then, after it dries, applying lacquer over the patterned areas and polishing them to finish. It takes a surprising number of steps and a long time to complete a single piece of makie.
