The original Filo (Italian for "thread") motif is drawn on black-lipped mother-of-pearl using Hiramakie (a technique where a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled before it dries, and after it dries, lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished to a finish).

This exquisite piece features a Filo motif that shines golden as if bathed in moonlight, drawn on black-lipped mother-of-pearl that subtly gleams like a dark night.

【What is Makie?】
Makie is a traditional Japanese craft unique to Japan, passed down since the Heian period. It's a technique where a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled before it dries, and after it dries, lacquer is applied to the patterned area and polished to a finish. It takes a surprising number of steps and a lot of time to complete one piece of Makie.
