Original "filo" (Italian for "thread") patterns are drawn on black-lipped pearl oysters using hiramakie (a technique in which a pattern is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before the lacquer dries completely, and then lacquer is applied over the pattern and polished after it dries).
This exquisite piece features a filo pattern that shimmers golden as if bathed in moonlight, against the faint, dark translucence of the black-lipped pearl oyster.
[What is Makie?]
Makie is a traditional Japanese craft technique that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing a pattern with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder on before the lacquer dries completely, and then applying lacquer over the pattern and polishing it after it dries. An astonishing number of steps and a considerable amount of time are required to complete a single makie piece.
Size: 15 (width) x 15 (height) x 3 (thickness) mm
Brand: Mt.Artigiano (Urushi Art Hariya)
