Frogs and tadpoles from Ito Jakuchu's "Sai Chufu" are depicted on black butterfly shell using hiramakie (a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, and then, once dry, lacquer is applied to the design and polished to finish).
This is an elegant masterpiece, depicting frogs and tadpoles glowing golden in the moonlight on a black butterfly shell that subtly透ける like a dark night.
【What is Maki-e?】
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that has been passed down since the Heian period. It is a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, and then, once dry, lacquer is applied to the design and polished to finish. It takes an astonishing number of steps and a lot of time to complete one maki-e piece.
