Using the hiramakie technique (a method where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries completely, then once dry, the design is coated with lacquer and polished to finish), the chicks from Jakuchu Ito's paintings are depicted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl with elegant and luxurious touches using traditional techniques.

【What is Maki-e?】
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese craft that originated in the Heian period. It is a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, then gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before the lacquer dries completely. Once dry, the design area is coated with lacquer and polished to a finish. A single maki-e piece requires an astonishing number of steps and a significant amount of time to complete.
