Seigaiha (waves) are designed in gold on the takase-gai (Japanese windowpane oyster shell), which shines with a translucent glow depending on the angle of the light. This is depicted using hira-makie, a technique where designs are drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before the lacquer dries, and after drying, lacquer is applied again to the design and polished.
