A gabion (snake cage) is depicted on black-lipped mother-of-pearl using Hiramakie (a technique where a design is drawn with lacquer, gold or silver powder is sprinkled on before it dries, and then, after drying, lacquer is applied over the design and polished to a finish).

This is an exquisite piece, featuring a gabion glowing gold as if bathed in moonlight, against the black-lipped mother-of-pearl, which subtly appears like a dark night.

[What is Makie?]
Makie is a unique traditional Japanese craft that originated in the Heian period. It involves drawing a design with lacquer, sprinkling gold or silver powder on it before it dries, and then, after drying, applying lacquer over the design and polishing it to a finish. A single makie piece requires an astonishing number of steps and a considerable amount of time to complete.
